Definition of Writing
Writing is a process of thinking and produces the words related to the topic about what we want to write, then the outcome from it, we can thoughts in the form of essays. According to Harmer (2001:31), writing is a way to produce language and express ideas, feelings, and opinions. Thus writing is a series of activities to express opinions or ideas in the form of written language symbols then the other people can read it. In writing, it is necessary for the writer to have the complexity of activities to compose essays properly because it involves regular ways of thinking and various requirements relating to writing techniques.
These requirements are: 1) the unity of ideas; 2) the use of good sentence; 3) paragraphs are well arranged; and 4) the application of the correct spelling rules. Based on the description above, writing is a series of complex activity processes that require staged and pour them into written form so we can make the readers understand the ideas that we explain.
Writing Elements
In writing, there are some elements that need to be considered. According to Liang Gie (2002), the element of writing consists of ideas, speech, order and vehicle. First is ideas, topic in the form of someone’s opinion, experience or relation. Ideas depend on the knowledge of the writer or their past experience. Second is speech, it is an expression of ideas that can be understood by the reader. There are various kinds of utterances, including description, persuasion, narration, argumentation and positioning. Third in writing elements is order, order is a rule that must be heeded when expressing ideas. It means writing is not just write, it must heed the rules in writing, for example using the right spelling. The last is a vehicle, vehicle is also often called tools. The vehicle is in the form of grammar, vocabulary and rhetoric (the art of using language). In beginner writers, rides are often a problem. They use vocabulary, grammar and rhetoric that is still as simple and limited. To overcome this the author must enrich the unknown meaning. A writer must write and read diligently.
From the description above, it can be seen that the elements of writing consist of the expressing of ideas, the words used by the author in conveying their writing must have a good vocabulary and grammar. Where to create good writing must include all of these elements.
Benefits of writing
Writing is an activity that has many benefits. According to Akhadiah (1998:1), there are several benefits of writing. First, writing can help the students to recognize the potential that exists in yourself related to the problems being written. Second, from writing the students can broaden the horizons of ability in thinking, both in theoretical form and in applied thinking. Third, problems that are vague, can be explained and reinforced through writing activities. Fourth, through writing, students can objectively evaluate their own ideas. Fifth, through writing activities, students will be able to absorb, seek and master more information related to the topic being written. Sixth, through writing activities it will be easier to solve problems that have been written in a more concrete context.The last, writing can motivate students to study and read harder.
Based on the explanation above, we can see that by writing, we can recognize the potential that we have in ourselves. We must know well about the topic that we want to write because it will help us in conveying ideas correctly and clearly, so that can make the reader understand what we want to write.
